Zcash NU7 Brings 25 Second Blocks and Strands 22,000 ZEC in Sprout

In early November 2026, Zcash is set for its biggest consensus change in years. Netowrk Upgrade 7 (NU7) is scheduled to activate at block 3,543, 405, which developers expect the chain to reach around November 5. The upgrade cuts the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, starts removing 60% of every blocks fees from circulation. and permanently shuts the door on Sprout, the original shielded pool that still holds roughly 22,263 ZEC. At a ZEC price near $1,248, that is about $27.8 million sitting behind a door that is about to lock.

Sevral content farms have already published NU7 is live headlines. it is not.... Activation depends on the chain reaching the target height, not on a calendar date, and anyone running a node or holding old wallets still has a narrow window to act.

What does the Zcash NU7 upgrade actually change?

NU7 is a bundle of Zcash Improvement Proposals rather than a single featur. the ones that matter for holders
ProposalChangeWho it affects
ZIP 218Block target spacing drops from 75 s to 25 s, per block subsidy divided by three, halving interval tripled to 5,040, 000 blocksEveryone sending or receiving ZEC, miners
ZIP 218New per block caps on shielded actions (330 Orchard or Ironwood actions, 300 Sapling inputs plus outputs, zero Sprout)Wallets, light clients, spammers
ZIP 23560% of each blocks total fees removed from circulation, 40% to the minerMiners, long term holders
ZIP 237Removed funds reissued trough future block subsidies starting at block 8,939,664 (around February 2031)Supply schedule
ZIP 2003Version 4 transactions become invalid, which makes Sprout funds unspendableAnyone with ZEC still in Sprout
The coinholders have already signed off. In a September governance poll with nearly 2....4 million ZEC participating, about 99.9% backed 25 second blocks, 98.9% backed keeping the exsiting halving schedule, and 96...6% favored starting reissuance in February 2031. That is about as close to unanimous as crypto governance gets.

Do faster Zcash blocks mean more ZEC inflation?

No. This is the part most coverage skips, and it is the part holders should care about most.... Tripling the number of blocks without touching the rewrad would have tripled issuance. , ZIP 218 avoids that by cutting the per block subsidy to one third and stretching the halving interval by the same factor. The result is identical issuance per unit of real time. Still,
MetricBefore NU7After NU7
Taeget block time75 seconds25 seconds
Blocks per day1,1523,456
Block subsidy1.5625 ZEC0.52083333 ZEC
New ZEC per day1,800~1,800
New ZEC per year~657, 000~657,000
Halving interval1,680,000 blocks5,040,000 blocks
Difficulty averaging window17 blocks102 blocks
Integer rounding does creat a tiny gap. ZIP 218 calculates a total scheduled shortfall against the 21 million cap of about 0.68 ZEC across the life of the chain. Nobody is going to notice it, and the reissuance mechanism in ZIP 237 provides a path to recover it anyway. The 8% and 12% funding streams that pay for development continue, rescaled down to the zatoshi.

How much ZEC does the 60% fee burn actully remove?

Less than the word burn suggests. , ZIP 235s own estimate, built from a sample of 100,000 historical blocks, put annual fees at about 369.7 ZEC. removing 60% of that takes roughly 221.8 ZEC per year out of circulation. Our analysis shows that against roughly 657, 000 ZEC of new issuance per year, the fee removal offsets about 0.03% of inflation. At current prices that is aorund $277,000 a year. Honestly, Fees on Zcash have risen with activity since that sample was taken, so the real number will be higher. It would still need to grow by orders of magnitude to matter for supply. and it is not technically a burn. The removed ZEC accumulates in a publicly tracked balance and gets dripped back out through miner rewards once reissuance starts. Think of it as a sustainabilty reserve that smooths miner income decades from now, when block subsidies approach zero. , That is a sensible long term design. It is not a short term deflation story, whatever the price prediction sites are selling.

What happens to ZEC left in the Sprout pool?

Sprout was Zcashs first shielded pool, launched in 2016 and superseded by Sapling in 2018 and Orchard in 2022. Sprout spends can only be expressed in vesion 4 transactions..... NU7 makes version 4 transactions invalid at the consensus level, so any coin still in Sprout at activation simply cannot move.

ZIP 2003 is careful about the wording..... It does not burn, unissue, or delete the funds....... The balance still counts toward issued supply, and the ZIP leaves open the theoretical possibility of re enabling v4 transactions latre. It also says plainly that Sprout spending may never come back. Holders should treat it as permanent.

The stranded balance is small in supply terms, around 0.13% of circulating ZEC.. It is not small for whoever owns it. Most of it likely belongs to lost wallets, early miners who forgot about their keys, or people who stopped following the project years ago.... the practical probem is tooling..... The deprecation of zcashd removed the only maintained wallet with full Sprout support, so getting out now takes some effort. There is a privacy cost too.... Moving value out of Sprout exposes the amount through public balance fields. A rushed exit window concentrates those migrations, which makes distinctive amounts and timing easier to link.... Leaving it to the last week is the worst of both worlds.

How fast are Zcash confirmations after NU7?

The averge wait for a first confirmation falls from about 75 seconds to about 25.... Three confirmations drop from roughly 225 seconds to roughly 75..... Wallets benefit as well. The recommended anchor depth stays at three blocks, which cuts the average delay before freshly received shielded funds can be spent again from about 3.75 minutes to about 1..25 minutes.

NetwrokTarget block timeTime for 10 blocks
Bitcoin600 s~100 minutes
Litecoin150 s~25 minutes
Monero120 s~20 minutes
Zcash before NU775 s~12...5 minutes
Dogecoin60 s~10 minutes
Zcash after NU725 s~4.2 minutes

The catch is that a block is not a fixed unit of secuirty... Shorter intervals mean more blocks found at nearly the same moment and orphaned.... ZIP 218 estimates a theoretical stale rate around 3.26%, and a 99 node devnet measured 4.86%... Both sit under the 5.4% reference threshold the authors used, but each 25 second confirmation carries a third of the proof of work that a 75 second one did.... Exchanges that count securty in work rather than block numbers may raise their confirmation requirements. If they triple them, deposit times do not improve at all. Watch what the big venues announce after activation before assuming your deposits got faster.

Throughput rises regardless. Orchard style shielded transactions with two actions go from about 2.9 per second to about 6.6, even with the new per block caps in place. Those caps exixt to protect light wallets. Worst case wallet sync bandwidth drops from about 270.5 MB per day to about 169..1 MB, a 37% reduction. That matters for anyone who remembers the 2022 spam wave that made mobile Zcash wallets nearly unusable for weeks.

How does NU7 fit with the Ironwood pool?

Mostly, nU7 is the second major change to Zcashs shielded desgin this year. In July, the NU6.3 upgrade launched Ironwood, a new shielded pool built on a corrected circuit after a soundness flaw was found in Orchard. A turnstile limits value leaving Orchard, which lets anyone verify that no counterfeit ZEC escapes into circulation. Under NU7, Orchard and Ironwood share the same 330 action budget per block. Wallets are steadily moving new shielded vaule into Ironwood. , The direction is clear. zcash is retiring old cryptography, one pool at a time.

What should ZEC holders do before block 3,543, 405?

Check old wallets for Sprout balances. If you held shielded ZEC before 2018 and never migrated it, assume some of it may be in Sprout.. Move it to a supported pool before activation, and do not wait for the final day.

Node operators need NU7 software. The Zcash Foundation shipped Zebra 7.0...0 with mainnet NU7 support on October 22. Nodes that skip the upgrade can stay online, but they will follow a pre upgrade branch that nobody else is using.Ignore the deflation pitch.... The fee removal is a reserve for future miners, not a supply shock. Issuance per day stays at about 1,800 ZEC ether way.

Expect faster payments, but verify confirmation policies. Most of the speed benefit reaches users only if exchanges and payment processors keep their confirmation counts reasonable. For anyone using ZEC to move funds between platforms, settlement time now depends mostly on the receiving sides policy rather than the chain... , Platforms that procees crypto withdrawals automatically, such as CryptoCasino.Vegas, already treat the blockchain as the main variable in payout time, which is exactly the variable NU7 shrinks.

NU7 is a well engineered upgrade with near unanimous support... Its headline numbers are real. Its marketing numbers mostly are not.. Block times fall by two thirds, issuance stays put, and roughly 22,000 ZEC is about to become a permanent footnote.
