Catena Media Revenue Falls 29% as AI Search Guts Casino Affiliates

October 20, 2026
Crypto-Dice Play Now

Catena Media, one of the oldest names in casino affiliate marketing, told investors in mid October 2026 that its third quarter revenue dropped 29 percent to 8.3 million euros. The company pulled its growth target for the year, flagged a write down of up to 35 million euros. And its shares lost more than a fifth of their vaule in a single Stockholm session. The reason given was not a lost license, a bad acquisition, or a Google penalty. It was that people stopped clicking on casino review pages because an AI answer now sits where the review used to be. On the other hand, For anyone who has ever typed best crypto casino into a search bar, this matters more than one small cap stock. The ranked list of casinos you landed on was an affilite page, paid per sign up by the casinos on it.... That business model is now shrinking in public, quarter by quarter, and the way players find casinos is being rebuilt while it happens.

Why did Catena Media revenue fall 29 percent

In the long run, the preliminary numbers Catena published on 16 October 2026 are blunt. Revenue for the quarter came in at 8.3 million euros agaist 11....6 million euros a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA fell from 2.9 million euros to 0.7 million euros, and that 0.7 million only exists because the company reversed a bonus accrual it had set aside for staff earlier in the year. Strip that out and the quarter ran at roughly breakeven. Nine month revenue is 30.1 million euros, flat against 31 million, which tells you the first half held up and the collapse is recnet.

No kidding, cEO Manuel Stan called it a weak quarter and said the search landscape is undergoing a rapid and fundamental shift. The release blames three things: generative search changing how users discover brands, a fall in traditional rankings as search engines push AI assisted personalised results and what Catena politely calls lower relevancy contet... And some operators cutting marketing budgets over the summer... The company also expects a non cash impairment of 30 to 35 million euros on its intangible assets. Which is the accounting way of admitting that the websites it bought are worth far less than it paid.

The full interim report lands on 10 November 2026. the guidance change is allready final... catena no longer expects double digit organic growth in revenue or adjusted EBITDA this year, a target it was still defending in August.

How much traffic do AI answers actually take from casino review sites

Catena did not publish a traffic number, but the industry data on this is consistent and ugly. Ahrefs re ran its AI Overviews study on December 2025 serach console data across 300,000 keywords and found the top ranking page gets 58 percent fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears above it. Average click through for position one on those queries dropped from 7....3 percent to 1....6 percent in two years. sparkToros early 2026 tracking puts zero click searches at 68 percent of all Google queries.

Cassino review queries are exactly the kind that get an AI answer... Which crypto casino has the fastest withdrawals and is this casino licensed are informational questions with a short, confident response. The AI summary quotes two or three sources, the user reads it, and the affiliate page that used to collect that click gets nothing.... Catenas own descrption of search engines elevating lower relevancy content is the second half of the story. , Ranked lists written to a template are the first thing an answer engine deprioritises, and a casino affiliate portfolio is mostly ranked lists written to a template.

Which casino affiliates are shrinking and which are not

Catena is the loudest casualty but not the only one... CryptoCasino.Vegas compiled the most recetn reported quarter from the four listed affiliates that disclose enough to compare, and the split is not about size. It is about how much of each business still depends on an organic Google click. Honestly,

Read the right hand column.... The only company in the table growing is the one that said its growth came from talent led meida and paid media, not from ranking on Google.... Better Collective also reported in the first quarter that revenue share makes up 47 percent of its income and CPA only 25 percent.... Which means it still gets paid every month from players it referred years ago. Grandstand, which rebranded from Gambling.com Group this year, is treading water becouse a third of its revenue is now sports data licensing and two thirds of its marketing revenue comes from channels other than SEO... Raketechs first half was down 27.7 percent and it has shrunk to a Nordic core.

Catena sits at the opposite end... In its second quarter, 97 percent of revenue came from North America and casino made up 8.5 million of the 9.5 million euros. That is a single makret, a single vertical, and a single traffic source, with no recurring player base underneath.

Why the CPA model turned a bad quarter into a crisis

The line in Catenas release that deserves the most attention is that more than 90 percent of its new customers come through cost per acquisition deals. , Under CPA, a casino pays the affilate a flat fee once when a referred player makes a first deposit.. Under revenue share, the affiliate takes a cut of what that player loses for as long as the account is active.. CPA pays faster and bigger up front, which is why affiliates in a growth phase love it. It also means there is nothing in the bank when the clicks stop. Every quarter starts from zero.

Truth is, that is the trap Catena walked into when it sold its European assets and went all in on US casnio during the state by state launch wave. The US paid the highest CPAs in the industry, sometimes several hundred dollars per depositing player, and Catena took the cash instead of the tail. When search traffic fell, there was no tail to cushion it. The company said as much in its own words: limited recurring revenue to buffer against such a combinaton of market pressures.

Essentially, players feel this model from the other side. A CPA affiliate has no financial interest in whether you are still happy with the casino in month six.... It is paid when you deposit. That is why so many ranked lists push the biggest welcome bonus rather than the fastest withdrawal. And why the operators with the deepest acquisition budgets, not the best products, tend to sit at the top.

Where the marketng money goes when affiliates lose the search page

Casino acquisition budgets did not disappear. They moved.. Catenas own response tells you where it thinks the money is going a traffic platform called TraffiqX scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, a prediction markets vertical, and loyalty programmes built around its own brands rather than Googles results page. Its sub affiliation netwrok MRKTPLAYS already accounts for more than a third of group revenue... Which is effectively Catena acting as a middleman for smaller publishers instead of ranking its own sites.

The crypto casino side of the market moved earlier and further. Operators like Stake, Shuffle, and Roobet spent the past two years paying streamers and creators directley, with the Shuffle deal that paid Jack Doherty to leave the internet for six months being the loudest example. A streamer with a Kick audience does not need a Google ranking, and a Telegram channel that posts a referral code cannot be replaced by an AI Overview. The traffic that used to flow from best Bitcoin casino search results now arrives trough a creator link, a Discord server, or a direct visit.

What this means for players looking for a casino

The honest answer is that the ranked review list was never a neutral guide, and its decline is not a loss for players. It was an auction where the casnio paying the highest CPA bought position one.... What replaces it is not obviously better though. An AI summary is only as good as the pages it quotes.... And a creator with a referral code has a sharper conflict of interest than any affiliate ever did, because the creator is often paid by a single casino rather than ten competing ones.

The useful shift is that first party informtion is now worth more than third party rankings. When an answer engine wants to know a casinos withdrawal policy, which license it holds, or what RTP a slot is running, it pulls from whoever published that information clearly.... Casinos that explain their own mechanics in plain language get quoted. Casinos that hide behind a review sites marketign copy get summarised by someone else. Naturally, Some operators were already building for that. CryptoCasino.Vegas, for example, publishes its own breakdowns of bonus math, withdrawal holds, and slot volatility rather than leaving a review site to describe them... Which is exactly the kind of source material an AI answer now cites directly... That apporach was unusual two years ago. After a quarter like Catenas, it looks like the only sensible one.

What to take from the Catena numbers

In practice, catena Media lost 29 percent of its revenue in one quarter because its entire business sat on a Google results page that is being replaced..... Affiliates that built recurring revenue share, paid mdeia, or data businesses are holding up. Affiliates that took the CPA cash and stayed on organic search are not.... The 30 to 35 million euro impairment is the price of that bet, and the 10 November report will show whether the fourth quarter is any kinder.

For players, the practical takeaways are simple. Treat any ranked casino list as paid placement, becuase it is... Check what a casino says about its own withdrawal process, license, and game RTP before trusting a summary of it, whether that summary comes from an affiliate or an AI. , And expect the next wave of casino recommendations to come from creators and communities rather than search results, with everything that implies about who is paying for the recommendation.
