The biggest bank in the United States just put tokenized dollars on Ethereum mainnet. On October 19, 2026, JPMorgans blockchain unit Kinexys extended JPM Coin, the deposit token that trades under the JPMD ticker, from Coinbases Base network to Ethereum itself.. Institutional clients can now move bank dollars on the same chain where most tokenized treasuries, most DeFi liquidity and a large share of the stablecoin supply allready live.... This is not a stablecoin launch, and that is exactly why it matters. Realistically, JPMD is not a token backed by a pile of treasury bills held by some issuer in the Caribbean. It is a claim on an actual deposit at JPMorgan Chase Bank, recorded on a public blockchain. Same legal plumbing as the money in a corporate checking account, new rails underneath. The questoin every crypto native should be asking is simple. If banks can put real deposits onchain, what exactly is the long term job of USDT and USDC?
What JPMorgan Actually Launched on Ethereum
In the long run, the facts are narrower than some of the headlines. jPMD has been live on Base since 2025, after a pilot announced in June of that year. The October expansion adds Ethereum mainnet as a second home.... And Kinexys says the token now supports transfers acros EVM networks, so a client can hold JPMD on Base and on Ethereum and move it between the two. base stays in service.
Access has not changed. jPMD is permissioned. Only vetted institutional counterparties onboarded through Kinexys can hold, send or redeem it. You will not find it on a DEX, you cannot buy it on an exchange, and no retail walet is going to receive it by accident. Holding is restricted to whitelisted addresses, which is the opposite of how USDC or USDT behave once they leave the issuer.
Kinexys gave one reason for picking Ethereum its established depth of onchain liquidity and tokenized assets..... Translated out of bank speak, that means the things JPMorgans clients want to buy and sell with tokenized cash are allready sitting on Ethereum mainnet. so the cash had to follow.
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, framed it as part of a broader shift........ We have clearly been in a year of further convergence between Wall Street and crypto, she said, adding that the traffic is not only Wall Street moving onto public chains but crypto firms becoming more embedded with traditional banks.

Why Ethereum and Not Just Base
Base is cheap and fast.. It confirms transactions in under a second for fractions of a cent, which is why JPMorgan used it for the pilot. But Base is a Layer 2 run by Coinbase, and the institutional assets JPMorgan cares about were never built there.JPMorgan Asset Managemnt already runs two tokenized money market funds on Ethereum mainnet.. MONY launched in December 2025, seeded with $100 million of the banks own capital and limited to qualified investors. JLTXX, the JPMorgan OnChain Liquidity Token Money Market Fund, followed on May 13, 2026, built as a government money market fund that stablecoin issuers can use for reserves under the GENIUS Act. Secondary reports put the two funds at roughly $800 million in combined assets on Ethereum, though JPMorgan has not published an official runnign total.Technically, before this week, a client who wanted to buy fund shares onchain had a problem..... The fund token lived on Ethereum. The bank cash token lived on Base. That meant a bridge, a delay, or an offchain settlement step, which defeats the point. With JPMD on mainnet, the cash leg and the asset leg sit on the same ledger. A redemption from MONY into JPMD, or a purchase of JLTXX with JPMD, can settle in a single atomic transacion. Either both sides happen or neither does. That is delivery versus payment without a clearing house, and it is the real product here.
Deposit Token vs Stablecoin What Is the Difference
Logically, both are dollars on a blockchain. The similarity mostly ends there. A stablecoin is a liability of a non bank issuer, backed by a reserve portfolio that the holder has no direct calim on beyond the issuers promise and whatever the law says in a wind down. A deposit token is a bank deposit. It sits on the balance sheet of a regulated bank, it is covered by the same capital and liquidity rules as any other deposit. , And depending on how regulators finalize current proposals, it can carry deposit insurance up to the standard $250,000 limit.
The bigger differnce is yield. Section 4(a)(11) of the GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, bars permitted payment stablecoin issuers from paying holders interest for holding or using the token. Circle and Tether keep the treasury yield.. Banks face no such restriction on deposits. a deposit token can, in principle, pay interest the same way a corporate deposit account does. Kinexys executives have said deposite tokens are expected to become interest bearing, though JPMorgan has not announced a rate for JPMD. Of course, CryptoCasino.Vegas compiled the main structural differences between the dollar tokens that now share Ethereum into a single comparison.
| Feature | JPMD (JPMorgan) | USDC (Circle) | USDT (Tether) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal form | Bank deposite at JPMorgan Chase | Payment stablecoin, non bank issuer | Stablecoin, offshore issuer |
| Who can hold it | Whitelisted institutional clients only | Anyone, subject to freezes | Anyone, subject to freezes |
| Can pay interest to holders | Yes in principle, as a deposit | No, barred by GENIUS Act | No, issuer keeps reserve yield |
| Deposite insurance | Potentially, under pending FDIC treatment | No | No |
| Trades on DEXs | No | Yes | Yes |
| Chains | Base, Ethereum (EVM transfers) | Ethereum, Solana, Base and many others | Tron, Ethereum and many others |
| Approximate supply | Not disclosed | Roughly $74 to $77 billion (Aug 2026) | Roughly $184 billion (Aug 2026) |
The table makes the trade off obviosu.... Stablecoins win on openness and reach. Deposit tokens win on legal certainty and, eventually, on yield. those two products are not chasing the same customer today.. whether they stay that way is the open question.
How Big Is JPMorgans Blockchain Business
JPMD is the public chain wing of a much larger private operation. Kinexys, rebranded from Onyx in late 2024, runs JPMorgans permissioned settlement netowrk. The banks own 2026 figures have described cumulative volume above $3 trillion and average daily volume above $5 billion, while more recent company material cites more than $7 billion a day... JPMorgan has also said it wants to push that toward $10 billion a day.
For context, total stablecoin supply sat around $308 billion in August 2026, down from a May peak above $320 billion.... kinexys does not publish an onchain supply figuer for JPMD, so a direct comparison is impossible. what can be said is that JPMorgan already settles billions of dollars a day through tokenized deposit rails... Until now it simply did so on a private ledger nobody outside the bank could see.
JPMorgan is not alone... Citi Token Services reportedly handles close to $1 billion a day for corporate clients, though that one also runs on a privtae network.. The difference with JPMD is that it now touches a public chain where anyone can inspect the contract and watch the flows, even if they cannot touch the token.
What It Means for Ethereum
The timing is awkward for ETH holders looking for a price story. In the week before the announcement, US spot Ether ETFs posted about $611 million in net outflows betwen October 12 and 16, with BlackRocks ETHA responsible for the bulk of it. ETH traded around $2,430 on the day of the news.. Institutions are pulling money out of the asset while putting their infrastructure onto the network. Those two facts are not contradictory. Banks do not need ETH to go up. They need blockspace that settles reliably, and Ethereum has the longest uninterrupted track record of any smart contract chain.
On paper, it does say somthng about where the settlement layer competition is heading. Solana has been aggressive with tokenized real world assets, which grew to about $4.3 billion on that network.... Tron dominates retail USDT transfers. but when the largest US bank needed one public chain where its fund tokens and its cash token could meet, it picked Ethereum mainnet over its exsiting Layer 2 home. The Glamsterdam upgrade, which hits the Hoodi testnet on October 26 with a 200 million gas limit, should make that choice cheaper over time.
Does This Threaten USDT and USDC
Believe it or not, not this year... JPMD cannot be used in DeFi, cannot be sent to an unknown wallet, and cannot be held by an individual. , Every retail use case that stablecoins dominate, from exchange settlement to cross border remittances to cassino deposits, is out of reach for a whitelisted bank token.
The threat is slower and more structural.... Institutional treasuries currently park cash in USDC because it is the most bank like option available onchain. , If a real bank deposit is available on the same chain, settles atomically against tokenized funds and eventually earns intrest, the institutional argument for holding a non yielding stablecoin gets thin. Circle in particular has positioned itself as the regulated, institution friendly dollar. JPMD going to mainnet is a direct shot at that positioning, even if nobody at either company would phrase it that way.The likely outcome is a two tier dollar market onchain... Permissioned deposite tokens handle bank to bank, fund to fund and treasury flows. Open stablecoins handle everything that needs to reach a wallet the bank has never met.
What to Watch Next
For starters, three things decide whether this becomes a footnote or a turning point.
Interest. The day JPMD pays a rate onchain, the GENIUS Act yield ban stops being an abstract policy debate and becomes a pricing problme for every stablecoin issuer chasing institutional money.
Interoperability with other banks. A JPMorgan deposit token is useful for JPMorgan clients.... A network where JPMD, Citi tokens and other bank deposits settle against each other on the same chain would be something closer to a new interbank system.DeFi access.. Permissioned pools that let whitelisted institutions use tokenized cash as collateral are already being tested across the industry.. If JPMD shows up in one on mainnet, that is the first real crack in the wall between bank money and open crypto liquidity.
For regular crypto users, nothing changes tomorrow.... Your USDT still moves on Tron for a few cents, your USDC still bridges acros dozens of chains. , And your withdrawals still depend on network congestion rather than anything JPMorgan does. Platforms built around fast crypto settlement, like CryptoCasino.Vegas with its automated withdrawals, keep running on the open stablecoins and native assets that anyone can hold... The interesting part is what happens over the next few years, as bank money and crypto money start sharing the same blockspace and quietly compete for the same institutional dollar.
