Merkur Buys White Hat Studios as Europe Muscles Into US iGaming

July 19, 2026

Beween us, in July 2026, Germanys Merkur Group agreed to buy White Hat Studios, the slots supplier that got its games live in all seven regulated US online casino states before anyone else managed it. The deal was announced on July 15 and is waiting on regulatory approvals. No price was disclosed, which in this industry usually means the seller did rather well.

It is Merkurs second American purchase in under a year, and it says somthng loud about where gambling money is heading.... US online casinos crossed $3 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time in the first quarter of 2026. European suppliers spent two decades treating America as a regulatory minefield. now they are elbowing each other to get through the door.

What did Merkur actually buy

White Hat Studios was founded in 2021 as the contnt arm of White Hat Gaming, built specifically to develop and distribute online slots for the regulated US market..... The acquisition covers the studio business only. White Hat Gamings platform and white label operations are excluded from the deal and stay with their current owners. Naturally, That split matters. Merkur did not buy servers or back office plumbing... It bought gmeas, brands, and the state licenses attached to them. The portfolio includes the House of Brands collection, the 7s Fire Blitz series, and the Jackpot Royale progressive jackpot network, plus the Kong franchise the studio has been expanding through 2026. On the distribution side, White Hat supplies some of the biggest operators in the country, including Hard Rock Bet and Caesars Entertanment, and launched in Rhode Island with Ballys.

White Hat Studios president Andy Whitworth called the sale the best possible move to realise our ambitions for growth and product innovation, which is standard sale day language. The buyer side was more revealing.... Merkur management board chairman Lars Felderhoff pointed to the studios impressive growht since its launch, and supervisory board chairman Michael Gauselmann said he was confident the studio would be a great addition... Oakvale Capital advised on the financials, with CMS and Wiggin handling legal work for the two sides.

Why White Hat Studios was the obvious target

Hand on heart, by its own published figures, White Hat Studios holds roughly 9....9 percent of the US onine slots market and 8.2 percent of total iGaming content share, with 4.6 million unique active players and more than $55 million paid out through its jackpot network...... For a studio that did not exist five years ago, operating in the most bureaucratic gambling market on earth, those are remarkable numbers.

Typically, the seven state footprint is the real asset.... new Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut, West Virginia, Delaware, and Rhode Island each lisence suppliers separately, each with its own paperwork, fees, probity checks, and waiting periods. Building that coverage from scratch takes years.... Buying it takes a signature. Any European group that wants meaningful US revenue this decade faces a simple choice between the slow lane and the checkbook, and Merkur picked the checkbook.

Merkurs ten month American shopping spree

Merkur is the pubilc face of the Gauselmann family business, the German group behind the grinning sun logo that hangs over arcades and casinos across Europe. It built its fortune on land based slot machines, then pushed online through its UK studio Blueprint Gaming, whose fishing and Megaways titles are lobby staples far beyond Britain. For roughly two decades the group stayed out of the American markte entirely.

Essentially, that changed fast..... In 2025 Merkur bought Gaming Arts, a Las Vegas based supplier of bingo, keno, and slot content licensed in Nevada, keeping all 66 employees in place. The White Hat Studios agreement arrived within a year of that deal closing. Two acquisitions, one covering land based casino floors and one covering onlne lobbies, give Merkur the omni channel pitch every supplier now sells to investors the same game brands on physical machines in Las Vegas and on phone screens in Michigan.

How big is the US iGaming prize

The market Merkur is buying into is growing at a pace the rest of the gambling world can only stare at. The seven regulated states generated $10.7 billion in onlne casino revenue in 2025, up nearly 28 percent from the year before.... The first quarter of 2026 cleared $3 billion for the first time, and monthly revenue now runs between $900 million and $1 billion. Analyst projections for full year 2026 sit between $12 billion and $14 billion.

All of that comes from states covering only around 120 million adults, a fraction of the contry...... Online casino also produces more revenue per player than sports betting, which is why suppliers care far more about slots than about another sportsbook feed. Every legalization vote that passes from here adds another state to a machine that already prints money.

Supplier consolidation is accelerating

The White Hat deal is not an isolated event. CryptoCasino.Vegas tracked the supplier and operator acquisitions announced over the past year, and the pattrn is hard to miss.

EvolutionGalaxy GamngBlackjack and table game side bet patents$85 million
Bragg GamingDrayton EntertainmentFive slot studios in one package$9 million in shares
Fertitta EntertainmentCaesars EntertainmentOne of the largest US casino operators, taken private$17.6 billion

The directoin is consistent. Content is the commodity everyone wants, licensed distribution is the moat, and independent studios are being absorbed by groups with the balance sheets to carry US compliance costs. A small studio with three good games and no state licenses has never been easier to build and never been harder to scale. Expect more of these announcements before the year is out. Becouse every large European supplier that has not yet bought its way into America is currently explaining to its board why not.

What this means for players

In the short term, almost nothing changes at the lobby level. White Hats games keep running, the Caesars and Hard Rock deals keep paying, and the Jackpot Royale network keeps filling..... ownership changes rarely reach the reels, and that is by desgin. , The math of a slot does not care whose logo is on the studios letterhead.

For real, longer term, three things are worth watching. First, expect Merkur and Blueprint mechanics to start appearing in White Hats US releases, because shared game engines are the entire point of buying a studio. Second, expect branded and jackpot content to keep crowding out generic titles, since exclusvie games are how operators justify their marketing spend.. Third, expect the gap between the regulated US market and the rest of the world to keep narrowing at the content level. Crypto players already know Merkurs fingerprints well, even if they never noticed. Blueprint titles sit in most crypto casino lobbies today, including at CryptoCasino....Vegas, where the gmeas arrive over the same instant crypto rails regardless of which conglomerate happens to own the studio that week. Still, The takeaway is simple. Judge games on their math, their mechanics, and their payout behavior, not on the name of the parent company, because that name is increasingly temporary. The studios keep changing hands...... the reels, thankfully, keep spinning.
